On June 26th Todd and I went out to Orem to the Upward Bound Annual Banquet. Britney (as well as Kari & I in the past) has been involved with a school program called Upward Bound. It is a program about helping students who are low-income and/or whose parents did not go to college (or at least long enough to receive a degree). It is about teaching the students the importance of going to college to get a four-year degree and earning college credits in high school. Through the school year the students have meetings, tests and activities that are provided by through the program. In the summer only 40-50 of the students from 5 high schools get accepted to the summer program. In the summer program they provide college classes, activities, and workshops for the students. The students are gone during the week and stay in apartments with Tutor Counselors. The students get to take 2 college classes (usually ranging from 5-6 credits), do many fun activites, do workshops (some more fun than others) and at the end of the program they have the banquet. The banquet is for awards and to show the parents what the students have been doing throughout the month of June. After the banquet, usually the first week or two in July the students get to go on a summer trip together. Usually everyone goes somewhere not to far, either to northern Utah or southern Utah and tour colleges, eat out at lots of places, and do fun activities and service projects. A few years ago they started having bigger trips for the Seniors that had just graduated. This year Britney (& her fellow Upward Bound Senior Students) got to go to HAWAII!!!! So not fair right? It was completely paid for and they get to be gone for a week!!! I am soooo jealous!!!
Britney is supposed to be getting back tomorrow and I hope that she had a wonderful time! I have missed her lots!! I will post some pics when she gets back!! :)
